Jewelry Care Old
PEARLS
Caring for PearlsLike any precious heirloom, pearl jewelry requires some care to preserve its freshness and beauty. The following suggestions will help you keep your pearls looking their best.
Daily Care
As an organic gem, pearls are vulnerable to chemicals found in cosmetics, hair spray, and perfume. To preserve your pearls' luster, always put on your jewelry after applying make-up and styling products. Pearls can also be harmed by perspiration. Before placing your pearls back in the jewelry box, wipe them gently with a soft cloth.
Storage
Contact with other jewelry may scratch pearls. Avoid tangles by fastening clasps, then lay each jewelry piece in a separate compartment of your jewelry box. When traveling, use a protective jewelry pouch or wrap each item in a soft cloth. Pearls can dehydrate when stored too long, so enjoy them frequently.
Cleaning
Never use an ultrasonic cleaner on your pearls. It can damage their nacre. Occasionally wipe your pearls gently with a cloth dipped in mild, soapy water. Then rinse the cloth in fresh water and wipe the pearls clean. Dry them with a soft cloth. If pearls come into contact with an acid substance such as fruit juice, vinegar, or other chemicals, immediately wipe clean with a soft cloth. Be careful not to submerge your pearls in water as this will weaken the silk thread.
Maintenance
From time to time, check the clasps or screws holding your jewelry together. With frequent wear, even well cared for pearls may loosen and they will require restringing.

Care of Enhanced Color Diamonds
Enhanced color diamonds are an affordable way to add a splash of color to any design. These color enhancements are done through one of two
methods, irradiation or high pressure/high temperature (HPHT).
Irradiated Diamonds
Irradiated enhanced color diamonds, like all diamonds, are legendary for their hardness and durability, resistant to general wear and tear, and not subject to change over time. Therefore, they require no special attention in daily use. It is only when they are subjected to temperatures above 450°C (900°F) that great care is needed. Generally, the only time this happens at a jeweler’s bench is during the resizing of a ring.
When resizing a ring with an irradiated enhanced color diamond, the stone needs to be protected from direct exposure to high temperatures. Covering the stone with Heat Shield, or another protective solution does this. After the diamond is cooled, the protective solution can be removed in a pickle pot compound.
Setting:
Irradiated enhanced colored diamonds can be set in most ways, including channel-set, prong-set, invisible-set, bezel-set, flush-set or used in pavé. However, these stones cannot be wax-set because that process involves high temperatures.
Cleaning:
Irradiated enhanced colored diamonds can be cleaned just like regular white diamonds, using steam, ultrasonic, acid or any jewelry cleaner. To clean a colored diamond at home, use a soft toothbrush and soapy water.
HPHT Diamonds
HPHT enhanced colored diamonds require the least care. Like all diamonds, HPHT colored diamonds are known for their hardness and durability, resistant to general wear and tear, and not subject to change over time. They require no special attention in daily use, and can also be subjected to high temperatures.
Setting:
HPHT enhanced colored diamonds can be set in all ways including channel-set, prong-set, invisible-set, wax-set, bezel-set, flush-set or used in pavé.
Cleaning:
HPHT enhanced colored diamonds can be cleaned just like regular white diamonds using steam, ultrasonic, acid or any jewelry cleaner. To clean a colored diamond at home, use a soft toothbrush and soapy water.
With these easy tips in mind, you can sell enhanced colored diamonds with confidence.
GEM STONE CARE
Caring for your Gemstone from AGTA & StullerGems are among the most durable of nature’s creations. With a little care, they will be as beautiful for generations to come as they are today. Keep in mind these gem care tips.
- The best way to clean your gemstone jewelry is in a bowl of water with a few drops of ordinary dish detergent. Using an old toothbrush or other soft brush, scrub gently behind the stone where dust and soap can collect. Then just rinse and pat dry with a soft cloth.
- A home ultrasonic cleaner should be used with extreme caution. It can be used to clean Ruby, Sapphire, Diamond, Amethyst, Citrine, Garnet, Chrysoberyl, and unadorned gold jewelry, but it may damage gems like Coral, Emerald, Lapis Lazuli, Pearls, Peridot, Tanzanite, Tourmaline, Turquoise, and any gem that has many inclusions. When in doubt, don’t use it.
- Remove your jewelry before vigorous activities.
- Every day household items can ruin your gemstone jewelry. Make sure you don’t expose your gems to the chemicals in cleaning products, hair care products, fragrances and cosmetics.
- When getting dressed, put your jewelry on last. At the end of the day, take your jewelry off first. Store your jewelry in a cloth-lined box or pouch and keep them away from other jewelry, which might scratch them.
